YOUR MOVIE-NIGHT MAP

First the lightning.
Then the monsters.

No complicated timeline. No prequels to untangle. The two Percy Jackson films follow the same order as their releases.

The Percy Jackson movie order

  1. The Lightning Thief (2010)

    119 minutes · Chris Columbus

Percy discovers that his absent father is Poseidon — and that being the son of a Greek god comes with some very dangerous family politics.

  2. Sea of Monsters (2013)

    106 minutes · Thor Freudenthal

A threat to Camp Half-Blood sends Percy and his friends in search of the Golden Fleece, through waters that are anything but ordinary.

Make it a double bill

Allow around 3 hours and 45 minutes for both films, plus time for a break. The studio lists The Lightning Thief at 1 hour 59 minutes and Sea of Monsters at 1 hour 46 minutes. Running times can vary slightly between listings and editions.

Can I start with Sea of Monsters?

You can follow the broad quest, but the first film gives you the useful foundations: Percy’s parentage, his friendship with Grover and Annabeth, Camp Half-Blood and Luke’s place in the story. Watching in order makes those returning relationships easier to understand.

What about a third movie?

The Logan Lerman movie series consists of these two films. The Titan’s Curse is the third book in the original sequence, not a third instalment of this film series. The unresolved setup at the end of Sea of Monsters does not lead into the Disney+ show.

Do I need to watch the movies before the TV series?

No. Percy Jackson and the Olympians on Disney+ is a new adaptation of the books with its own cast and continuity. Choose the films for the original big-screen version, or start the television series on its own terms. Our page-to-screen guide explains the distinction.

Where can I watch?

Check the official Lightning Thief page and official Sea of Monsters page for studio viewing links. Subscription, rental and purchase options depend on your country and can change. Confirm the title, price and availability in your local service before paying.

A note for family movie night

The US rating for both films is PG. Fantasy violence, threatening monsters and scenes of peril may be intense for some children. A rating is a starting point; local content advice is more useful when deciding for a particular viewer.
